Wood procurement and environment PDF Print E-mail
The forestry department of Junnikkala Oy aims continuously at principles that are economically, socially and ecologically sustainable.

Almost 90% of our raw material is purchased from family-owned stands from Central and Northern Ostrobothnia. About 10% comes from the woods of the national Forest and Park Service ("Metsähallitus"). The age distribution in the woods, we procure from, is young, which is the reason why these stands grow almost twice as quickly as what is felled annually.

More than half of the wood we use comes from the procurement carried out by our own forest department directly from family-owned stands. The rest is delivered by forestry companies operating in our area. Junnikkala Oy does not buy any wood from areas included in protection plans.

In accordance with the environmental principles of Junnikkala Oy we aim at supporting the biodiversity of woodlands, reducing the use of energy per production unit and minimising the features in our operations that are detrimental to the environment. In procurement, we follow the ISO 9001 quality assurance system and the environmental management system ISO 14001:2004.

Also our most important suppliers have the same systems in duty and we require that they follow the same environmental principles with regard to the raw material they deliver to us.

In conjunction with wood sales we agree with the forest owner on special measures to be taken in the wood, such as protection of individual trees, springs and other special targets (special appendix). Thus we are able to ensure a level of nature care in each individual logging site, which satisfies both contract parties.

In logging, we use long-term contractor partners who follow the quality assurance and environmental policies of Junnikkala Oy. In addition to that Junnikkala Oy requires that its partners take care of their social sustainability by fulfilling their statutory responsibilities as employers.
By internal audits and audits carried out by our co-operative partners, we aim constantly at making our operations even better.

The forest is our common future.
