The history of the Junnikkala sawmill PDF Print E-mail

Water and wood have been the elements the Junnikkalas were accustomed to earn their livelihood. After Hiski Junnikkala has died, his son Aarne Junnikkala started to manufacture wooden water pipes for the region of Central-Ostrobothnia. These pipes still exist and are in use in the Kalajoki river valley. Aarne bought also a circular saw, which was then used by the family's oldest son Ismo Junnikkala when he started sawing operations. At the beginning of the 1960's, he built an one-framed sawing mill, which is considered to be the beginning of the Junnikkala's industrial wood processing history at the present location. The "birthday" is marked at the 16.08.1960.

In 1965, Heikki Junnikkala joined the operation of the mill and in 1968 they built a two-framed sawing line, which was the beginning of continuous and more extensive operations of the company. Ilpo Junnikkala joined the company in 1971, when a more vigorous export business of sawn goods was commenced. A fire destroyed the sawmill in 1980, but a new mill went into operation already during the same year. Junnikkala Oy has grown constantly over its whole history. The most demanding investment took place in 1998, when the whole sawing line was modernised and made more flexible.

At the dawn of the 3rd millennium, the fourth generation of Junnikkalas is strongly involved to develop the wood-processing industry into a more modern and competitive service plant for demanding customers. The work, carried out in the last 100 years, is being upgraded and expanded. This requires professional forest owners as sellers of raw material, expert and demanding customers and, above all, employees who are committed to their work and to the continual development of their skills.
